Your Name

Each time we met for class in the afternoon we met someplace different. Ms. Frances planned several of these field trips, but as one of our assignments each student was to plan a location to meet for our fieldtrip experience. This was fun because class was never repetitive and boring. It was also a great experience because as we met in a new place each week we discovered new teacher resources in the area that many of us were not previously familiar with. Below is a list of the places we went.

Field trips!!!

1-22 Indian Center

We went to the Farmington Indian Center and talked about our names.   Edward Smiley was a guest speaker. He shared some experiences about diversity.  He explained the benefits of the Indian Center and why it is there and what it is for. He talked about its history.

1-29 Smart lab

Our class met at SJC Smartlab and we looked at the IRIS Modules. They went over culture and are a great resource. They were very interesting and I am glad to know of them. We also created our web pages for our class.

2-5 1860

On this day we met Harriet Tubman in class. It was wonderful. Her story was interesting. The class was taken to 1860 and the underground railroad. It was a great Chautauqua experience

2-12 Sycamore Park

Sycamore Park Community Center was such a nice facility.  Many of us were unaware of it but it has provided us with some great information.  The center provides lots of activities for families and a safe place for children to play.

2-19 ENLACE

We went to ENLACE. Mabel had a ton of great information that will be helpful with teaching our diverse students. What a gem ENLACE is for our community. They are reaching out to the Latino community and getting them prepared for college. They have classes taught in Spanish and other help available for Latinos. They are talking with High School and Middle School counselors. They support tuition for those without S.S. cards. Tutoring and possibly using ENLACE to help with conferences is available. Getting the word out that ENLACE is here and ready to help is important. They are working on spreading their horizons, but as of now few know about the opportunities available to them. ENLACE was a wonderful experience. I am so glad I know they are here to help if we need it. Spread the word!:)

2-26 Nature center

I had no idea this was here. It was great to get information on it and know it is available for teachers and classes. The geese were fascinating and the hands on activities would be great for students. It was nice to have time to explore. This is the way all students should be able to learn; at their own pace and in their own way.

3-5 Cold stone

Ymmy! Happy Birth Day to me! I Bought a cake and we enjoyed it as we went over our experiences and introduced 2 chapters. They do tours and teach students how to make icecream, unfortunately we were not able to see it. But it is available.

3/12/09- Today's we went to the Aztec Public Library. I have never been here before and was very impressed. The library is doing a lot for its community and I never realized what an asset it is.

3/19/09- today we went to the E-3 Children's Museum. We saw a great PowerPoint about students who are linguistically diverse. We were able to talk about our own thoughts and “tap the elephant on the butt.”

4/02/09- I had no idea Navajo prep was such a great school! I had images of a prison students are made to go to, but on the contrary it is a wonderful environment that students must apply to. Learning hoe it worked was great and now I must confess it has opened up another employment option for me.

4/09/09- I have never experienced such interesting food. To think this bit of culture has been sitting in my own back yard and I have never been. The avocado pop cycle was interesting and tasty.

4/16/09- Today we went to the Mormon Church. I didn’t know they had genealogy and I found that it is a very interesting hobby. This is another great resource that is available which I hadn’t known about previous to this field trip.

4/30/09- Today we learned how to edit a movie from a camera. I hate to say this was redundant, but I learned this in the technology in the classroom class. The practice was god though and the class had a good conversation about some teaching controversial issues.
